In order to effectively improve your fitness, you need to have a general understanding over many aspects of your body.

YOUR BODY WEIGHT

Your body weight is a combo of muscle, fat, water, blood, organs, waste, tissue, and bones. The scale tells you your weight but it doesn’t tell you how much is muscle, fat, or excess water weight. You can gain or lose a lb or two during the day because of fluctuations so it’s best to weigh yourself once a week, first thing in the morning, for a more accurate and reliable way to track weight progress.

YOUR GENETICS

Your height, structure, where you store fat, and muscularity are genetically determined when you reach puberty. These characteristics determine your base shape, appearance, and can’t be changed without surgery or drugs. You can, however, increase or decrease body fat and muscle to chisel out a new shape. We all have a natural limit for muscular potential and the lower your body fat gets the harder it is to maintain. Obesity is caused by behavioral and environmental factors, not genetics. A healthy lifestyle prevents obesity no matter what your genetics are.

YOUR BODY IMAGE

How you look should be a motivating factor to get fit, but your main outlook should be for health. Good health is subconsciously attractive, and aesthetics follow as a consequence of being healthy. Making your health a priority directly affects your mental, physical, and emotional well-being, helping to shrink any body image issues. Focusing on your fitness, food, and life, instead of weight and appearance, will lead you to the results that you want, deserve, and seek.

The three main archetypes of body types are ectomorphs, mesomorphs, and endomorphs. Most people are a combo of the below three types. The odds of anyone fitting perfectly into any one category is pretty rare. You can probably identify with traits from one or more groups. Regardless of where you fit in, each body type is beautiful, strong, and imperfectly perfect. Do you know your body type?


An ectomorph normally has a small frame, slight build, lower than average body fat, and generally has a super high metabolism.

A mesomorph has a more athletic sporty frame, broad shoulders, visibly defined muscle and good posture. Mesomorphs respond the best to weight training and muscle gains are seen pretty quickly.

An endomorph has a solid frame, and strong, well-rounded muscles. Endomorph’s have moderate amounts of muscle, excessive body fat, and typically gain fat more easily than the other body types.

EXERCISE

Vigorous intensity at three times or more a week at a minimum of 20 minutes, or at moderate intensity at least five times a week for a minimum of 30 minutes.

There is really no ideal standard that currently exists, but epidemiological fitness levels show suggested ranges of 15-27% for women and 7-19% for men.

LDL (BAD) CHOLESTEROL

If there is no heart disease risk, 100–129 mg/dL (2.6–3.3 mmol/L).

HDL (GOOD) CHOLESTEROL

60 mg/dL (1.6 mmol/L) and higher.

TRIGLYCERIDES

Under 150 mg/dL (1.7 mmol/L).

Even if you don’t enjoy exercise there has to be at least one workout that you consider “tolerable”? Think about what makes you feel alive, brings you joy, and excites you, and apply that to a workout or fitness activity. What will make you addicted and beg for more? What’s your soul mate workout? What do you love?

Love gives you energy, creates a powerful rush of endorphins, and makes your world feel new and exciting. Just like finding a partner in crime you have to be open to it. New love inspires you to care about yourself, your goals, and the impression you make on others. If you don’t love exercise, you just haven’t met your soulmate (or swolemate) workout yet.
